Jul 4, 2018

We are talking about transgender issues.  We’re looking at Transgender Identity Issues through several lenses and from a variety of human perspectives.

Our guests join us from all over America.

We speak with Clark Musto. Clark join's us from the San Francisco Bay Area, where he lives with his wife and two dogs. Clark is a Clinical Research Manager at Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Janssen is a Johnson & Johnson company. Clark was assigned female at birth - some might say he is biologically female.

Clark transitioned within the last year in order to align with the gender to which he identifies, male. Clark’s story gained notoriety as a result of the gentle and empathetic way Johnson and Johnson handled his transition.

Clark gives us the correct terminology to use when referring to trans people and trans issues. Clark helps us understand the differences between sex, gender, and gender identity.

Clark shares what it was like growing up gay and trans, how his school experience was, how life is now, and how we can all learn from the way Johnson and Johnson stood by him during his transition.

Kathe Perez joins us from Colorado. Kathe is a Speech-Language Pathologist - and the founder and president of Exceptional Voice, Inc. Kathe has focused her work on helping those in the transgender community discover their true voice. Kathe has focused her clinical practice on caring for the voices of transgender people for the past 18 years.

Kathe developed the world’s first voice training mobile app for transgender people. The app is called EVA (which is an acronyn for the exceptional voice app).  Kathe will tell us about her work in the trans community and about this award winning app.

We speaking with the Mother of a transgender man and her 19 year old son. Mom - who will remain anonymous - shares the feelings she experienced when learning her child is transgender, her initial concerns, how she feels now. Mom talks about the supports (or lack there of) available to families in the transition process.

Her son, Jules, shares his side of the story and his thoughts on how his mother handled the transition.

Dr. Christopher McGinley joins the discussion. Chris is a former superintendent of a large suburban school district and current member of the School District of Philadelphia Board of Education. Chris has dealt first hand - in the school setting - on issues related to the accommodation of transgender students.

Vern Trent joins us as well. Vern is a School Psychologist with almost 50 years of experience in the school setting. Vern is a regular on the Sunday School Show.
